BeFunky and Graphic Novels

We all know students love graphic novels. I decided it was time to create a PD session to show teacher how students can use an online photo editor to help create graphic novels for any content area. I had so much fun working with my teachers today to show them how to use befunky.com. Befunky offers a free and fee based service. Things I like about the free account: 1. There is not registration unless you want to have  log in. 2. There are numerous FREE options for photo effects and “Goodies” (clipart) to add to the images.

After showing the teachers the basic steps on how to use the site, I went through this suggested list of steps to have students create graphic novels. Graphic novels can be used in any content area to create a higher level Bloom’s Project. Below are some steps you can follow for students to create graphic novels.

  1. Students create a story.
  2. Students storyboard the story and decide what photos are needed to create the graphic novel.
  3. Students use a digital camera to create the photos needed for the story. This will allow the students to become personally involved in creating the story. You can also use http://creativecommons.org for students to find copyright friendly images to use.
  4. Students upload the photos one at a time to edit it for the graphic novel.
  5. When the edited photo is downloaded save it to create a sequence of photos, (For example; graphicnovel_01, graphicnovel_02, etc.) Note: File and Folder Management will be very important for students at this point.
  6. Students then use any software such as MS Word, MS Publisher, etc. to put the photos in a graphic novel sequence.
  7. Students save file.
  8. Teachers can decide to have students print the books or showcase them in a round robin viewing session in a lab setting.

One thing I want  you to notice about the list… Students are doing the work, not the teacher. As teachers take their first steps in to technology integration there is a little anticipation on the teacher’s part because he or she may not be an expert. The best part about integrating the technology is the teacher doesn’t have to be the expert. Students will figure it out… SO GO TRY IT!

Twitter in French Class

On Thursday, we are trying something pretty exciting. I am working with Mrs. Layman to create a Twitter conversation with her French 2 students. The students are being asked to read the article; To speak another language isn’t just a cultured, it’s a blow against stupidity. We are hoping the article will spark some thought provoking discussion in the class… and the students are looking to transfer that discussion to an online open discussion with the world.

His Life

Today marks an end of an era. My grandfather, James H. Sansonetti, Sr. passed away. He lived 102 years 9 months and 18 days on this earth. He was the son of an Italian immigrant. The patriarch. An architect. A banker. An entrepreneur. And MY grandfather. I held him on a pedestal even as he got older and grumpy. I couldn’t help it. I always looked up to him. (The picture is him at 101)

I think why I have always been in awe of my grandfather is because of everything he has seen in his life. He was born in 1907. He lived through every American war in the 20th century. Too young to fight in WWI and too old to fight in WWII. He saw so many advancements in science and technology in his life time. As a child he would create radios from a Quaker Oats container, copper wire, and galena crystal. As an old man, he would proudly show you his remote control for his hearing aids. He was always fascinated by my latest gadgets. When I visited him, seeing my digital camera almost made him giddy. He couldn’t believe that you could take a picture and see it instantly.

On his 100th birthday, I made him a cake and had his senior high school picture made in to a sugar sheet and placed it on his cake. He couldn’t believe he was seeing his picture on the cake and it was edible. He called my aunt to tell her he was about to eat his face. It made us all laugh.

He never let me record his stories about when he grew up… so if you don’t mind I would like to take a few moments to archive them here.

My grandfather liked the girls from a young age. In the fall, he would take the corn used to feed the animals and fill up his pockets before school. To show a girl how much he liked her on the way to school or in the school house he would throw pieces at her to get her attention. He told me it got him in a lot of trouble with the teacher but he continued to do it because he wanted to get the girl’s attention. When I asked him if it worked. He told me no but he didn’t know any better at the time.


My grandfather graduated from high school in 1925. He was the editor in chief of the year book. In his yearbook there was a section “Why the Seniors went to school for the 4 years” His response was “to learn the dictionary.” Maybe that is where my love of learning came from. He nickname was “Turkey” and he never did quite explain that to me. He was know for being bossy… and I have to say, that was dead on! My grandfather definitely had a knack for telling people what to do and how to do it.


My grandfather has his name is on a patent from the 1940’s. I never knew this until one day, I did a search in Google Patents just out of curiosity. It was for a Fabricated Brush Holder. It was designed to be used on direct-current machines to help save the usage of copper and brass. No, it’s not an exciting patent but its a patent none-the-less.


One of the most emotional phone calls I ever had with my grandfather was when I was standing on Ellis Island looking at my Great-Grandfather’s name carved in a granite wall listing the names of all of the immigrants that came through in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was so proud that I was able to see it.

My grandfather and I always had a connection with history. For the first part of my education career I taught US history. When I taught the 20th century history, it was so meaningful to me because I had him to help me experience it. He told me stories like … in 1936, he and my grandmother just moved in to a house. They could barely afford the rent. It was winter and my aunt was just a baby. They didn’t have enough oil in the heater to heat the house for winter so they just did the best they could until one day the landlord came by to collect the rent. My grandfather let him in and the landlord said, “This house is too cold for a baby to be in.” My grandfather told him it was all they could do to eat and pay the rent. They did not have money to buy oil. The landlord left and the next afternoon, the oil truck showed up to fill the tank for the winter.

WW II stampsThroughout WWII he rationed his stamps … I was able to show my students real artifacts and help the history come to life through his stories.


My grandfather and my grandmother met on a blind date in 1930. They were set up by their best friends. He told me that my grandmother didn’t like him very much when they first met but she eventually warmed up to him. When they got married my grandmother was a maid on a train. Typically at that time if you were a young single woman, you had to quit the job on the train because married women could no longer be maids. My grandfather and grandmother pleaded with the train owner to let her to continue to work because they needed the money. The owner agreed but my grandmother was not permitted to wear her wedding band to work.

My grandmother passed many years ago and I know now they are together again and making one another happy again.

Thank you for letting me share a little of my grandfather with you. I know I babbled through. My mind is being flooded with memories. I will miss him but I am so very fortunate to have had him in my life for so long.

Inspired

Today I was inspired by a young man, Deonte Bridges. He is the 2010 Valedictorian of Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, GA. He was interviewed on CNN by Don Lemon. He was the first African American Valedictorian at Booker T. Washington in over a decade. Through his hard work he has received over $1 million in scholarship funding. He is a true inspiration to young and old.

I don’t know him but I wish him success throughout the rest of his life.

Going down another road…

In technology education there are so many roads and avenues to choose. I would like to say in the last decade I haven’t been afraid to take different turns or go down roads less traveled.

This past year, I have been traveling around the southeastern United States making my way as an Education Consultant for The W.H. Platts Company. It has been an amazing experience. I stepped out of the comfort zone of public education to be a part of a new movement for SMART Resellers. The Education Consultant position was created to help the resellers for SMART develop a better relationship with education customers. To have someone from education locally to help work with districts on professional development as they move to interactive whiteboard technology in the classroom. I was ready to do this… I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. It was that road unknown for me. It wasn’t paved… it was bumpy along the way but it brought me to today.

Some may say it brought be back to a familiar place but I would have to slightly disagree. The road this led me to was back to public education. Next week, I will be joining the rest of the educators I know as we begin to head back to school. I have accepted a job at Ridge View High School in Columbia, SC as the Integration Technology Specialist. Yes, this is a familiar place to me. I taught social studies at Ridge View 10 years ago. It was the job that gave life to my journey down the technology education highway. Now, I have returned to be a support for teachers as they take their own journey with technology education. I feel refreshed… and alive … to be returning to public education.

For the longest time, I thought I need to keep moving forward and up to make the most impact. I went from the classroom to a district position to the consultant world. All the while thinking, the larger my audience the larger the impact. What I learned is … for me to make an impact on education I have to be where the students are… and that is in one school making a difference everyday.

Was my time as an Education Consultant wasted? Absolutely, NOT.  Over the last year I have learned a lot about myself.

1. I need to be around people when I work. (I worked out of my house and that got boring)

2. The longer I was a consultant the less I had to say about technology in education. I felt disconnected from the pulse of education.

3. I learned how important good luggage is… I wore out every piece of luggage I own this year.

4. 35K miles on a car in one year isn’t good for your car’s value or wear and tear! 🙂

And if I had not traveled down this road I would not be standing here today proud to say, “I am in public education. I am a dreamer and I am here to make a difference.”

ISTE and EduBloggerCon

I made it to Denver and I am SO excited to be here. ISTE has always been a place for me to be inspired and I am ready for inspiration! I didn’t arrive in downtown Denver until about 6pm tonight and with time change I didn’t do much but I did manage to get out and about with Chris Craft on 16th St. for dinner. I must say it is BEAUTIFUL and there is a lot to do in the area.

Tomorrow I am attending EdubloggerCon. I have wanted to attend for a few years but my travel plans never seemed to work out. I am so happy this year did. If you haven’t heard of EdubloggerCon it’s:

Now in its fourth year, this all-day unconference gathering for those interested in social media / Web 2.0 in education takes place the Saturday (June 26, 2010) before the official ISTE 2010 start. Honestly, this is a great event, and many will tell you it is the event to attend at ISTE because it’s all about connecting and sharing. EduBloggerCon is based on the idea of an “unconference”, and is being organized by the participants in real time on-site. It’s maybe better referred to as a “collaborative conference.” There are no formal presentations, just “conversations” that you or others facilitate. To lead a session, it is not expected that you prepare material but that you have a topic you want to open to discussion. –EdubloggerCon

I am hoping I have something to contribute but I will most likely be a fly on the wall tomorrow just listening and learning. 🙂

So this week I hope to accomplish the following:

1. Get inspired.

2. Absorb as much as I can from members of my PLN

3. Take this opportunity to make the connection back to the schools and classrooms. A lot of times when we come to conferences we get excited and when we get home it may not be as easy to do what we learned. I want to get excited and put what I learned in to action. If I need to advocate for change then I will be that advocate.

SMART Notebook Dual Page Display

UntitledHave you used the Dual Page Display function in your SMART Notebook software? The Dual Page Display is not the same as the new SMART Dual Touch boards. Dual Display is a way to show two pages in your Notebook file at one time. I think Dual Page Display is one of the under utilized functions in SMART Notebook.

This is a video I created to show you how to use Dual Page Display.

Although this video showcased uses in social studies, you can use Dual Page Display across the curriculum. For example, in a Special Education or elementary classes, Dual Page Display can be used to move the student from one task to another. As the student finishes a task, he or she can move his or her icon to the next step on the next page in the Notebook file. Math classes display one page as a word problem and the second page as clean workspace to figure the problem. Language Arts classes can showcase an excerpt of a novel, poetry, or reading on one side then analyze the excerpt on the second page.

Social Network Inspiration

I have been in need of what I would like to call “Social Network Inspiration.” I have been on Twitter for 2 1/2 years now and have built a strong Personal Learning Group but I found I have been doing a poor job of spreading information as well as seeking information. Twitter has transformed a  lot over the last 2 1/2 years I have been involved. I have formed relationships with many of the people I follow. Those relationships vary from online banter to meeting at tweet-ups to friendships. In the last few months I have been using Twitter a more of a virtual coffee break than learning tool. So I have decided to shake things up a bit. I started thinking about a blog post I read from John Pederson. In the post, his #1 Twitter rule was…

1.  I’m random about who I follow and why.  I frequently delete around half the people I follow and start over.  This strategy helps me discover new people, reconsider why I’m following the ones I do, and keeps my ADD in check.

No, I don’t have ADD but I like how randomly following people helps him discover new people. So this past week I started following a group of new people. I wasn’t quite as random as John Pederson but I am working a lot in North Carolina so I asked @kellyhines (her blog) for a few North Carolina educators to follow. Kelly came through in a flash with about 10 great people to follow. There is an excitement with NC educators that is intoxicating. Since adding the educators to my list, I feel renewed and excited to learn. So thank you Kelly and thank you NC educators.
